The Central Board of Direct Taxes has issued an office order announcing promotions in the Income Tax Department. As many as several officers have been appointed to the grade of Principal Commissioner of Income Tax in Level 15 of the pay matrix. Vide the order dated 23rd September 2025, promotions are made on an in-situ basis with effect from the date of assumption of charge and will continue until further orders.
As many as all the promoted officers will continue to hold charge of their existing posts until formal postings are notified. The order further requires the concerned Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax (CCA) to forward compliance reports regarding the joining of as many as the promoted officers to the CBDT and its Data Base Cell by 30th September.
This round of promotions reflects the Department’s effort to recognize as many as deserving officers and elevate them to higher responsibilities in line with seniority and service requirements. By strengthening leadership at senior levels, the CBDT aims to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in tax administration across as many as its organizational units.
The order has been circulated to relevant administrative authorities including Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax, Principal Director Generals, Zonal Accounts Officers and also shared with staff associations and other government departments for necessary action. Importantly, after this promotion exercise, the Department is expected to take up promotions to the posts of subordinate officers soon benefitting officials waiting for their career progression.
